This was one of the first 'Momentary Lapse' tour VOIOs to circulate (certainly the first that I ever came across) . . . and Jiminy F. Christmas, did it suck donkey.
Shot from a low angle almost directly at stage right, the Madison Square Garden VOIO offered up the relative novelty of seeing (most of) the band in profile at the expense of missing the entire impact of the light show. Even as much as I enjoyed the 1987 tour, seeing it done from one angle with little embellishment from the invisible lighting rig for two hours and change is a bit much to sit through more than once. Worse, a combination of horrendous color bleeding (no doubt due to generational loss), wincingly distorted audio, and some unendingly jerky and uncertain camera work rendered this VOIO virtually unwatchable.
On the plus side, those who are into seeing such things will delight in seeing our hero David Jon Gilmour picking at his nose and scratching his ass at key moments when he thinks he's safely out of the spotlight. Yes, indeedy, this is what VOIO collecting is all about, kids.
About the only aspect to this recording worth a positive note is Mr. Screen. Thanks to the close-in position of the cameraman, the band's films were captured bright and clear -- something that many of the other higher-quality VOIOs could never quite achieve as the films tended to be dim and flickery, if not completely washed out by the encircling VariLites. Otherwise, pass and move on.
